Men’s A FL Division 2B (Round 5)

Dunshaughlin 2-10    Ballinlough 1-08

Dunshaughlin’s second Men’s team also played on Tuesday evening at home to Ballinlough’s first team and after a shaky start came away with a well-deserved five-point win. A commuting delay for starting goalkeeper David Jennings meant Josh Wall had to stand between the sticks for the first quarter. Although Dunshaughlin had early chances they didn’t put away it was the visitors who kicked off the scoring with a point from play from Benji Smith in the sixth minute, Harry Ryan added Ballinlough’s second a minute later and the men in red extended their lead further with a goal in the 13th minute from Tom Shine after a Ballinlough free dropped short into the square and Shine was quicker than any of the Dunshaughlin players to the breaking ball. The arrival of Jennings in the 16th minute seemed to give the whole team a lift as in the 10 minutes that followed Dunshaughlin scored 1-4 without reply. The four points all came from Wes Goodwin (2f) and the goal from goalkeeper turned striker Wall. Ballinlough battled back, Benji Smith adding his second point from play before Tom Shine fought his way through the Dunshaughlin tackles to send over a point and leave the sides level at half time on a score line of 1-04 apiece. Apart from a burst of Dunshaughlin scores in the last five minutes of the 2nd half, scores were hard to come by, both sides guilty of not putting away scorable opportunities.  The match was level at the 57th minute mark with both sides managing just three first half points each by that stage, Dunshaughlin scorers Shane Gallogly, Mark Devaney & Jack Hethertington, the visitors Mick Geraghty, Mark McCullen and Shine with a free. Hethertington scored his 2nd point in a row in the 58th minute, followed immediately by Wall point and the final nail in the coffin for Ballinlough on the hour was a goal palmed to the net from Conor Jennings. Mark Devaney added another point from a free in the 2nd minute of injury time. The final score of the game was a consolation point from Ballinlough’s McCullen. It was a great five point win but it was also a great achievement that our 2nd team were able to field a very competitive team when other clubs were not able to field a 2nd team on that night.
