Royal Gaels v St Michaels

Div 1 League Round 3 28th June 2021
Final score
Dunshaughlin Royal Gaels 3-11
St. Michaels 1-07

The Dunshaughlin girls got off to a great start in their 3rd game of the Division 1 League with Lisa Mooney supplying the opening score of the game closely followed by a cracker of a goal from Suzie O’Rourke in the opening minutes. St. Michaels were then lucky enough to slip over their first point of the game but with a strong defensive line made up of O’Neill, Ryan and Leonard, they had to work hard for it. Niamh McEntee then popped over a lovely point from a free which again, was answered by a corresponding point for the home team. Petra O’Reilly added her name to the scoreboard with a lovely point from play closely followed by Karla Kealy who snook a goal past the St. Michaels keeper, leaving the score line as  2-03 to 0-2 going into the first water break.

Michaels came out strong in front of the RG goals for the first few minutes after the water break, with two attempts at scores. However, these attempts failed to materialise into points on the board for the home side, thanks to the defensive efforts of Ryan, Leonard and Quinn pushing forward and dispossessing in the full back line. This resulted in another point for the away team through the boot of Laura Murray. Suzie O’Rourke also added her second score of the game after she sent an impressive long-range goal flying past the Michaels keeper, after which Mooney was replaced by Ciara Gorman. Ava O’Brien’s brilliant runs down the line also paid off with her movement creating an opportunity for Gorman to add her first point of the game …and then her second point… and then her third! Leaving Royal Gaels with an impressive lead at half time of 3 goals and 7 points to St.Michaels 4 points.

After Lauren Brophy was substituted on for Suzie O’Rourke, Ciara Gorman continued her scoring streak in the second half and opened the score line for the black and amber side adding another point to her tally after some seriously dogged defence from Quinn and Kealy in the backs. Both teams defence were cleaning up a lot of ball for the 3rd quarter with Quinn, Leonard and Ryan breaking out and clearing the ball. Gorman racked up another point from what seemed an impossible angle leaving her tally at the end of the 3rd quarter as 3 points, after an additional well taken free, bringing RG lead to 3-10 to 0-5 going into the last 15 minutes. Changes made include Leah Sheridan for Ava O’Brien, Ciara Galvin for Lauren Brophy and Ella Moyles for Laura Murray.

The start of the 4th quarter saw Michaels step up a gear, scoring 1-2 in the opening few minutes of the quarter, unanswered by the home side until Gorman cleared another point for the away side after a great ball in from O’Muiri. The home team managed to get two more points on the board before the final whistle but thanks to a great save from McLoughlin the Dunshaughlin side finished with a clear lead of 3-11 to 1-7 ahead of their next match against Oldcastle which takes place in Dunshaughlin at 8pm on Monday 5th July.
